What are the essential things a young man (or anyone) should be aware of when it comes to crafting a successful career in the corporate world? Johan Fourie, the COO at Centrafin, used to daydream about rocking a killer corporate career back in the day (Okay, not that far back in the day).
Johan kicked off his career in the motor industry and, by 2005, made the leap into rental finance with Merchant West Asset Finance. Fast forward to 2008, he joined Centrafin as a Financial Manager, snagging a promotion to Financial Director in 2010—just before the company got scooped up by Pinnacle Technology Holdings Ltd (now Alviva Holdings Ltd). Over his impressive 15-year stint with Centrafin, Johan managed to secure a whopping R1.6 billion in funding, playing a crucial role in the company’s phenomenal growth. The 7-year-old Securitization vehicle he oversees has been a game-changer, propelling the business from a modest R350 million to a staggering R1.3 billion in approved facilities with various funders over the years. Fast forward to 2022, he’s the COO, with multiple departments reporting to him and a laser focus on implementing strategic moves.
Pardon me while I catch my breath from that info overload. Needless to say, Johan probably has some golden nuggets of advice for ambitious young men with similar aspirations. We had the chance to dive deeper into his story during our interview, and we’re thrilled for you to uncover more about him as well!
Let’s get to it:
Q: You seem to have built quite the career for yourself. How can a young man in South Africa build a successful career in the corporate world?
JF: It’s all about your inner fire and determination, understanding your boundaries. Being a COO isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Each person has their distinct purpose and journey in life, and there’s no purpose greater than another—we all contribute significantly to society. Identify your purpose and dive headfirst into it. Go for it with gusto!
Q: What was your dream as a young man?
JF: I decided to make my journey as enjoyable as it could be, and naturally, that led me to Accounting.
In all seriousness, I always thought I could conquer any challenge I set my mind to. Choosing a path in corporate administration was my way of aiming high, unlocking my full potential, and securing a solid living for my family.
Q: How do you network effectively in the corporate world?
JF: Get out there and meet people face-to-face! It’s the ultimate secret sauce for building connections, forging strong bonds, and cultivating relationships that stand the test of time. Personally, I’ve seen the magic of networking elevate my career. It’s like having a powerhouse rolodex—whenever I need advice in any situation, I know just the right person to call. Each player in your network brings a unique set of skills and expertise to the table, making it a dynamic web of support.
Q: How do you balance work and personal life?
JF: Navigating this delicate dance is like walking a tightrope, and the key to mastering it is putting your family front and centre. Prioritizing them is the golden ticket to striking that tricky balance with finesse.
Q: How relevant is higher education in terms of achieving success in corporate?
JF: Well, that depends on your current situation and the goals you’re aiming for. Once you’ve mapped out your current position, the key is to pave the path towards your goals. If your aspirations don’t scream “degree required,” don’t feel compelled to don the cap and gown. But if it’s the golden ticket to your dreams, why not take that leap? It’s about tailoring your educational journey to the rhythm of your distinct ambitions.
Q: Given how stressful corporate is, how do you manage your health?
JF: I actively play outdoor sports for stress relief – just to shake off the work and tension. Know and listen to your body – take care of it.
Q: Did your Movember Stache have game?
JF: Absolutely – I am talking Tom Selleck or Hulk Hogan.
Q: How do you successfully negotiate salary and benefits?
JF: Recognize your true value, wear confidence like a crown, and when it comes to negotiations, let your skills and abilities take the lead! Actions always speak louder than words.
Q: Which industries would you recommend to the next generation in terms of career longevity?
JF: Get ready for a rollercoaster ride in the employment landscape over the next decade or two, courtesy of AI. Wherever a computer can outperform its human counterpart, there is a risk of AI taking over that respective job position.
Business consultation, finance, and consulting are industries where human relationships play an integral role, and thus in my opinion it is a safer option in terms of career longevity. It is difficult for a computer to form long term, genuine relationships. Software engineering is also another industry to consider, because if you can’t beat them, join them.
Q: Who was your ultimate role model as a young man:
JF: I’ve always found my inspiration in the world of sports, where passion, relentless drive, and unwavering values take the centre stage. A few of my personal heroes in this realm include the legendary Ayrton Senna and the indomitable Joost van der Westhuizen.
